Farmer Wants a Wife - the morning after

Derek, Sarah and Karla made their TV debuts last night on Farmer Wants a Wife.

As predicted, it turned into a tussle between Canadian Karla, who had a "fixation with British men", was keen "to get knocked up" and outdid Viz's Finbarr Saunders when it came to double entendres.

Home counties Sarah, contrastingly, spoke of wanting to "meet a future soul mate".

Farmer Wants A WifeG.jpgAfter much deliberation, Derek chose Karla although, when she announced she was off to Australia, ended up with Sarah.

I think he made the right choice. I was certainly glad he didn't choose the Russian woman on the shortlist who - worryingly and bizarrely - listed among her "likes" medication.

We didn't find out how Karla reacted to, as presenter Louise Redknapp put it, Derek "seeking comfort in the arms of another".

I think it's fair to say he wasn't expecting her to take it well, though.

"She'll kill me... slash my tyres, burn down my house and kill my dog," he said.

Like any self-respecting farmer, however, when asked about whether he'd informed her of developments, he pointed out: "I'm not going to do it on the phone because it'll cost me a fortune calling Australia!"

When I spoke to Derek this morning, he confirmed that he and Sarah are still an item (in fact, they watched the show together last night). Let's hope this is one TV story that does have a happy ending...

He hasn't seen Karla since that trip to London where she outlined her Australia plans - and, frankly, he sounded a tad worried about what her response to the show might be.

"I think I better lock my dog up," he said.

We were shouting at the TV screen - he should have picked Sarah in the first place!!

Tim Teeman, TV Critic of The Times, makes some interesting observations, which also occurred to me whilst watching this programme. He thinks there were more juicy issues and unanswered questions to be explored (see below for a snippet of his comments):

"Three issues went unclarified. How did Derek's feelings change so suddenly? What did Karla make of his volte face and her friend's shark-like moving in on her man? And the really niggling question: How did Sarah feel about being passed over first, and then chosen only after Derek's first choice absented herself? She's sloppy seconds, surely."

...and another thing. What kind of a name in modern life is Derek..? Surely thats the name of man working in the 1970s on the production line at British Leyland, Longbridge, Birmingham? He likes tea breaks, bacon butties, biege clothing and has a dodgy haircut...70s Derek that is, although you could apply some of the above to Farmer Derek..?

The republicans are complaining about people spending their own money instead of helping the poor and the democrats are that bums can work as well as anyone and the Clinton's can spend their money however they want to.
