Forget golden balls Beckham, meet 'golden nose' Pooley

A master cheese grader is set to insure his biggest asset for £5m - his nose.

Nigel Pooley who works at Wyke Farms in Somerset uses his expert sense of smell to select over 12,000 tonnes of cheddar every year.

The £5m tag is calculated from the time it would take to replace Nigel - five weeks - multiplied by the firm's weekly turnover of £1m.

Such big sums are more typically associated with celebrity and sporting anatomy parts: David Beckham, for example, insured his body for £100m.

A spokesman for Lloyds reckoned Nigel "breaks new ground as our first cheese nose".

"It's nice to be valued so highly," says Nigel. "I suppose I took my nose for granted until now."

His boss, Richard Clothier, adds: "As an industry veteran with a naturally honed palate, Nigel plays an integral role in ensuring the quality of every batch that leaves the farm."

Here's a photo of the nose in question.
