Here are some photos from the National Trust, showing some of the terrible flooding in the North West.
The Trust is now planning a massive programme of restoration work in the Cumbrian countryside following the rain and floods.
Hundreds of staff and volunteers have been working to deal with the immediate impact on communities, but the damage will need years of work to repair.
Many of its tenant farmers and cottage dwellers in the region have been flooded and, after the immediate priority of finding them a dry home and "making safe", there is the infrastructure rebuild - walls, fences, clearing paths and tracks and re-building bridges.
"We want to work with our farmers, neighbours and others in villages and remoter communities to help them get back on their feet," says a spokesperson.
The Trust is currently gathering information on the work needed and organising volunteers. If you want to help, contact: nw.volunteering@nationaltrust.org.uk
