This definitely falls into the category: Don't try this at home.

The picture was snapped in Cambridge, New Zealand, by Bart Dinger who happened to spot this perilous pruning manoeuvre.

The gardener had decided to trim the two metre-high privet hedge - by using a ride-on lawnmower hoisted aloft by a crane.

Bart explains: "I couldn't work out why cars were slowing down until I caught sight of the crane... and then the man on the lawnmower.

"I thought they were just hoisting the mower into the garden, but then they positioned it on top of the hedge and he started up the motor.

"The guys were taking great care to run the mower along the hedge from end to end, really doing quite a good job of trimming it flat."

But despite the display, the green-fingered gardener behind the stunt wanted to remain anonymous. "We just thought it would be a bit of a joke - a bit of a laugh," he said.

The mower operator's wife, who also did not want to be named, was as surprised as anyone when she arrived home to find her husband on the hedge.

"I saw the crane first and thought 'great, the hedge is getting trimmed', but I didn't realise this was what they were planning," she said.

"These are basic boys who hatched a plan to get the job done with the tools they had at hand.

"We can assure you that there were definitely no instructions on the mower to exclude their great plan!"
