From Alaska to Argentina

A farmer from Aberdeenshire, Chris Reid, is about to ride a motorbike from Alaska to Argentina.

Along with a friend, he'll be making the 22,000-mile trip through 15 countries in only 12 weeks.

It's in aid of the Colin McRae Vision, a new charity supporting children's health and education throughout the world.

The pair's adventure is being undertaken with no back-up crew or previous knowledge of North or South America.

Chris explains: "We arrive in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 31 and pick the bikes up from the airport and head north. First, we ride to Prudhoe Bay, the most northerly point accessible by road in North America, we then start our journey south, zigzagging our way through the Rocky Mountains down into the USA.

"We will visit many places of interest on our way south such as Yellowstone National Park the Grand Canyon, the Tikal pyramid in Guatemala, the Inca trail and IguaƧu waterfalls as we cross two continents.

"In Mexico, the leisurely winding tarmac roads end and the rocky gravel strewn roads of central and South America begin.

"Overall we need to average 370 miles a day, but the bad roads and desert in South America means we'll have to make up a lot of time when the roads are good in North America, covering up to 1000 miles a day when the going allows!

"In Mexico we will ride through the second deepest canyon in the world before moving on to Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama.

"Panama is where the road ends and we have to fly from there into Columbia, over the 'Darien Gap', 60 miles of impenetrable jungle.

"From Columbia to Ecuador we arrive at the city of Quito, having crossed the equator!

"From here we will not only be challenged by harsh conditions but also the altitude - the highest pass we cross reaches 4500m in Peru.

"Once there, we will walk the Inca trail before heading to Bolivia to ride the 'death road' (famously driven by the Top Gear crew).

"Chile is followed by Argentina where we will cross the Atacama Desert on our way to Brazil.

"Then onto the last leg of the journey where we head first to Carlos Paz in Argentina where we will be visiting a children's hospital that has just benefited from equipment donated by the McRae Vision.

"Then to Ushuaia on the Tierra del Fuego, the most southerly town in the world.

"All going to plan we will then make it back to Buenos Aires to fly home on December 7."
