The last Emperor…

A giant red stag believed to have been the UK’s largest wild land animal has been shot.

Standing nearly 9ft tall and known as the Exmoor Emperor, the animal was found dead close to the Tiverton to Barnstaple road.

A licensed hunter – rather than a poacher – is thought to have legally killed the stag, which weighed more than 135kg (300lb).

The Emperor was shot during the annual rut, sparking calls from wildlife enthusiasts for stags to be protected during the mating season.
