Quilting her way to farm business success

A keen sewer who started offering quilting lessons for fun has just been awarded a regional prize for farm diversifications.

Keen sewer Jo Colwill runs Cowslip Workshops on her family’s 100-acre organic farm near Launceston.

At first she offered quilting classes, but the business has since branched out to include a shop, cafe, classes and gallery – and even employs 17 people. Here are some of the Cowslip team with their creations:

The success has earned the business the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association’s Duke of Cornwall’s Award, and a cash prize of £1,000.

“This is a business. We have to do the VAT, fill in forms and so on but it succeeds, I think, because we all love sewing,” says Jo. We just do it because we love it.”

The prize will be presented at the upcoming Royal Cornwall Show.
