The next Wainwright

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

And there was me joking about how I was trying to emulate Alfred Wainwright.

I've got nothing on this kid. He's incredible.

A little bit of me thinks he should be doing the things any other self-respecting five-year-old does, like burning ants under magnifying glasses and upsetting girls by dangling worms in front of them, but you can't knock him.

Forget The X-Factor final this weekend, this is The Hatch Factor.

This new initiative in Devon, which aims to help reconnect kids with the food they eat, enables youngsters to hatch chicks in the classroom and have fun learning about the lifecycle of the birds as they watch them grow.

Happy Halloween

Enjoy tonight, if you're taking part in any Halloween-related activities.

It's certainly been a spooktacular (sorry, couldn't resist that one) day at Newlyns Cookery School when children have created an array of ghoulish delights.

Kids in Birmingham are getting the chance to experience country life, many for the first time, after chartered surveyors Berrys donated 100 pairs of wellies to three primary schools.

The firm decided to make the gift as part of the Year of Food and Farming which aims to offer young people in England direct access to the countryside, agriculture and food.

By visiting farms in the region, children will have the opportunity to ,earn about the 'field to fork' process.

Now this is what you call dedication.

It's a picture of Harvey and his daddy reading the Farmers Weekly from his cot on the special care baby unit at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

Mum Sarah Stern sent me the picture as she thinks he may possibly be the youngest reader as he was only a few days old when this picture was taken.

More and more people are getting into this blogging lark.

We've now even got four chidlren blogging for us here at Farmers Weekly (we set them to work young in the countryside!) so if you want to read what life's like growing up on a farm, check out the Kids Connect Campaign Blog.

Proud mum Fiona Watts sent us this picture of her son, two-week-old Harry. She wonders if he's Farmers Weekly's youngest reader...

"He enjoyed drooling at the tractors and the cows and then fell asleep when it all got too much for him!" she says.

Well done, Jodie

I've just opened a letter from a gentleman called Philip Francis whose grandaughter was one of the winners of Farmers Weekly's recent kids art competition.

Sadly, we didn't get space to publish all the winning 40 pictures in the magazine, so Jodie never got to see hers in print.

Philip's asked if we could somehow publish it - "so that a gran and gramps can see a smile on Jodie's face when her picture makes the press."

So here it is. Well done, Jodie. your drawing was fab!

Picture%202.jpgSupermarkets often get a bad press over the way they treat farmers - and sometimes for the way they treat shoppers too.

The retail giants' reputation for playing hard and fast with the food we eat is frequently well-deserved. But not always, it seems.

I've just discovered a Farm to Fork project run by The Co-operative Group - Britain's biggest farmer and community-based retailer.

The project makes it possible for school children to experience a real farm at work, so they can see where their food comes from and how it is produced.

We've been inundated with photos after mentioning we'd put some of your favourite pictures of your kids on Field Day. This one is nine-month-old Finlay Low from Ellon in Aberdeenshire, helping out with the lambing.
