Big horse stirrups interest

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

We've had mini animals this week, so to add some balance I thought I'd go to the other end of the scale and show you this whopper:

noddy.JPGNoddy stands at a mere 20.2 hands (or 2.05m, for those who don't speak horse), making him the world's tallest equine.

The seven-year old, 1.5 tonne shire horse has been doing the rounds of agricultural shows in his native Australia, where he's apparently proving a big hit.

With puns like these, you'd think Tim was actually writing this, wouldn't you?

Going dotty over a cute foal

This pony, resembling a Dalmatian dog, has been born to a bay Dartmoor mare in Devon. His unusual colouring comes from his father who is an Appaloosa, a spotted breed. All together now: Aaaaahhhhh.

Farmer Frank is racing in the 3.40 at Leicester. He can't lose. Well he can, obviously (and he has done in the past) but as he's Farmers Weekly's unofficial mascot, I felt obliged to bet a couple of quid at 12/1...

Just received another book in the "Know Your..." series.

This one is Know Your Horses and, priced £4.99, I reckon it would make lovely present - especially for youngsters interested in horses.

Some of the hats at this week's Royal Ascot are nice. A lot are just plain silly.

Not that I typically read the read The Sun, you understand, but this story on its website can't pass without a mention - a horse trainer in Dorset who rides a zebra to the pub.

High horse

This could be the world's tallest horse.

And as for the secret of its latest growth spurt? Herbal tea and Granny Smith apples!

This is one horse that could give that giant bullock, The Field Marshall, a run for his money...

This is why I never learn

Farmer Frank romped home by three-and-a-half lengths. It was pure poetry.

I went to the bookies at 5pm, gave them some money, then went back at 7 and got what I'd given them along with some more. Genius. Why has no one thought of this before?

I'm on the horse...

I don't like horses.

This is probably partly the result of seeing as horrible accident involving a motorbike and one as a kid - but that aside, I think they're ugly, clumsy, expensive wastes of grass.

That said, here's a heartwarming story about one from the Daily Mail.

Nags in wigs

It's not only dogs in wigs. It's horses, too...

What a stud (manager)

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

This press release made me laugh.

It's about a Scottish Agricultural College student, Claire Convery, who's been given an award by Lantra, the skills council for the environmental and land-based sectors.

Now that might now strike you as funny in itself but - and maybe this is just my juvenile sense of humour - but what made me smile was reading about one of the previous courses she'd studied. Stud Management.

Anyway, well done Claire for picking up the HE Learner of the Year award.

Gentle giants could disappear

Scrivshire.jpg

This beautiful beast was spotted at a Shire Horse event at Peterborough a while back. Sadly, though, the future of this breed of ‘gentle giants’ could be under threat, according to reports in the national media today.

We need a few more stories like Bonnie...

racing.jpg

I’m not a big fan of horses (unless they’re in books like this, of course!)

Never really been bitten by the racing bug, either. But a pal of mind, Hugh, is staying for a few days in Cheltenham for the racing. He’s gone very quiet. Which could mean he’s doing very well. Or very badly.

Board to be wild

The unseasonably mild weather over the weekend prompted the usual raft of stories in the media about people doing spring or summer-like activities in February. This is one of the few that warrants a second glance, though: a guy practising what, apparently, is set to become a popular new sport: horse-surfing.

Bearing in mind, I'm not fond of water and I hate horses, I think I'll give this one a miss.

Laydown%20Horse.jpg

You learn something every day.

I've often wondered what precise military function The Household Cavalry's lay-down horses served.
