Points to remember about BTV

  • Vaccination is the only method for successfully controlling BTV
  • Bovilis BTV8 was the first vaccine chosen by DEFRA for England and Wales and the only vaccine used in The Netherlands to successfully control widespread disease
  • Vaccinate all stock whether booster dose or first injection before the risk period, even if vaccinated in late summer 2008
  • BTV can be mistaken for other commonly-seen conditions, so if stock is unvaccinated you'll never know whether they have BTV or everyday conditions such as lameness, heat stress or a simple eye infection. Vaccinate for peace of mind

More than 15m doses of Bovilis BTV8 were used in the UK last year, and the disease was prevented from taking hold. We must learn from Europe and not let this disease become widespread in UK livestock. Vaccination of all susceptible stock is essential.
