Limousin cattle from two of the north-west’s leading herds shared the Carlisle sale-ring last weekend, with a 12-month-old heifer from the Cloughhead herd reaching 12,000gns.

It was a fitting celebration for Lake District breeder George Hutton, who notched up 25 years in the breed with the top call for his maiden heifer, Cloughhead Ainsi.

Ainsi is by the French-bred herd sire Saiga, who is out of Lola, one of France’s top cows for muscling traits.

Mr Hutton’s Keswick-based herd consigned 26 maiden heifers, averaging an impressive 2085.

Determined bidding by David Kelly of Kirkby Lonsdale, Lancashire, secured Ainsi for his Nether Hall Farm.

The sale also saw 20 heifers from the Clitheroe-based Procters herd, brought out in fine style by herd manager, Gary Swindlehurst.

Mr Kelly gave 5000gns and 4000gns for the herd’s two best lots.

His 5000gns call switched ownership of Procters Vodka.

This served heifer (beef value 17) is by Greenwell Ronick, a Greenwell Member son.

Her dam is a powerful Roughley cow by Dimitri.

The 4000gns nod snapped up Procters Valessa (beef value 35), a maiden heifer by the Nenuphar son Sydney and out of a cow by the successful bull Neutron.

There was still plenty of cash about for Mr Hutton’s stock when Cloughhead Alison – a full sister to the 24,000gns Cloughhead Titanic – made 4800gns to buyer M Abberley of Brecon, Powys.

Alison is by Heros and out of a cow by the good producer Cloughhead Jurassic.

Local buyers Messrs Blake gave 3700gns for the maiden heifer Cloughhead Agnes, who has a clutch of Paris Show-winning ancestors through her sire, Ugues.

The first heifer in the ring realised 2500gns for Procters Farm when breeder D Orr & Sons of St Andrews, Fife, took the served heifer Procters Usabell.

By Neutron and out of a dam by Haltcliffe Nijinsky, she was in-calf to Sympa – the big money-earning bull in the Ridley family’s Haltcliffe herd.

Averages:

Cloughhead herd – 26 maiden heifers £2085, Procters herd – 11 served heifers £2090 and eight maiden heifers £1811 (Harrison & Hetherington).
