Simmental breeders enjoyed a good trade for both bulls and females at the breed society’s show and sale at Carlisle last week, where bidding reached 3100gns and 18 bulls averaged £1844.

The top call came for a smart young bull from Northamptonshire breeders Stephen and Claire Evans’ Astcote herd.

Astcote Sparrow Hawk is an AI-bred son of Blackford Hawk, a bull that was sold privately to the Starline herd.

His dam is the 10-year-old Agardsley Annie, a daughter of Agardsley Clinton – one of the best breeding cows in the Evans’ 12-cow herd.

The February 2005-bred Sparrow Hawk weighed 750kg on the day and had a Terminal Sire index of +22.

“We’re certainly finding that figures are being considered more closely by commercial buyers,” said Mr Evans after the sale.

Sparrow Hawk, who stood third in his class under judge Ron Loftus of the Blackpool herd, stays in Cumbria with Ian Bell, Aspatria.

Woolhanger Farming Partners made sure they didn’t return to Barnstaple, Devon, empty handed.

They gave 2800gns for the second prizewinner Simply Rudolph from Rob Fitton’s herd at Bolton, Lancashire.

He is by the 9000gns bull Slievenagh Fantastic and out of the Brinkton Brilliant dam Rosten Horsfield.

Isle of Man buyer Paul Kelly gave 2400gns for one of the senior bulls, Edenbank Raymond, an Innerwick Grenadier son from John Irving.

And maturity also impressed the judge who awarded the male championship to B & D Williams’ Needwood Romeo from their herd in Staffordshire.

By the good producer Salisbury Challenger, he had a terminal sire index of +15 and goes to Newton Stewart with Messrs McDowall & Co.

Style and shape tipped the scales and won the in-calf heifer Holtsead Lydia the supreme ticket.

She was consigned by from West Yorkshire breeders F & J Andrews.

By Camus Brandy, she is in-calf to Omorga Prince who was reserve champion at Perth 2004 and made 15,000gns.

Lydia realised 2000gns to G Perratt, Irvine, Ayrshire.

Averages: 18 bulls £1844, two cows and heifers £1785, two senior maiden heifers £1086 and two junior maiden heifers £719.
