Farmers in Wales will shortly be able to apply for capital grants worth up to £7,500 to help fund projects that improve water management.

Expressions of Interests for the Glastir Small Grants Scheme will open on 12 December 2016.

A previous round of the scheme ran in the summer and offered grants of up to £5,000 for projects that lock up carbon, in a bid to reduce emissions.

But this time the grant limit has been increased and the funding will be targeted at projects on the theme “water”, with an emphasis on water quality.

Activities to separate clean and dirty water on farmyards, hedge-planting and restoration, and small-scale tree planting are all likely to be eligible.

To help people find out more about the scheme, Farming Connect is hosting three events across Wales.

Applications can only be made online through the Rural Payments Wales (RPW) online facility. The events aim to help guide farmers through that process.

The scheme will also cover technical requirements such as the need to provide geo-tagged photos with a claim to prove the work has been carried out.

Farmers will be required to present before-and-after photographs that confirm the date, time and location they were taken.

However, this is possible on most mobile phones with an internet connection and a camera, so long as the right settings are chosen.
