Contract base prices have risen by up to 2p/kg as shown below but spot quotes have tended to reflect a static Deadweight Adjusted Pig Price which remains at 145.07p/kg, writes commentator Peter Crichton.

As a result spot bacon was mainly traded within a tight 147p to 150p range according to specification.

Lighter cutter weight pigs destined for the fresh meat sector continue to meet only limited demand, reflecting reduced high street and catering demand and trading at a modest 4p to 6p/kg above bacon prices.

With a relatively firm euro and stable EU mainland pigmeat prices, most sellers were able to fix deals in the 112p to 116p range according to specification.

Weaner prices have also finally started to improve, with the latest AHDB 30kg ex farm weekly weaner average up from £40.03 a head to £40.89 a head following forecasts of generally firmer finished pig prices in the New Year.
