Bakewell Market, Derbyshire. Demand outstripped supply in all sections at Bakewell’s first sale of 2012, despite it being held on Bank Holiday Monday (2 January). “Buyers were clearly happy to attend and those vendors who had chosen to consign stock were well rewarded, especially in the store cattle section, where purchasers were working very hard to restock yards,” said auctioneer Alastair Sneddon.
Finished and over 30-month old cattle also commanded a good trade, averaging 179.4p/kg and 116.3p/kg, respectively. OTM Limousins sold to a top of 187p/kg, with dairy cows averaging 111.69p/kg. Finished bulls averaged 165.8p/kg, with steers at 174.3p/kg and heifers at 190.9p/kg.
In the sheep ring, 1,169 hoggs averaged 208.44p/kg, with best-quality butchers lambs fetching 220-230p/kg.
