Rarely these days do you see a commercial animal grace the championship line-ups with a price tag of less than £1000.

But for regular showgoers Alistair and Elizabeth Vance, their bargain buy heifer certainly came up trumps in this year’s Beef Expo suckled calf classes.

Having bought the stylish and showy Sassy Lassy from Messrs Trafford through Leyburn mart for the respectable price tag of £750, the 462kg heifer easily won the female section, going on to take the overall title and £500 price money.

Although Alistair and Elizabeth doubt they will make the journey to this year’s Smithfield Show at Shepton Mallet, the pair along with Sassy Lassy will be heading to the Highland Show this month and the Scottish Winter Fair.

Standing reserve to the Vance family in the overall championship and taking the lead in the native section were local exhibitors, the Waugh family of Carlisle, with their purebred Galloway steer Mr Muscle, owned jointly by Marion Paul of Dumfries.

In the male Continental section it was turn of Derek Winney and his Limousin cross lightweight steer Mad Max, sired by Suanders Stallone and bred by Paul Dawes of Dinmore Estate, Hereford.
