Beef sales increased by 6% in the 12 weeks to 12 May, compared to the same period last year, led by strong demand for stewing steak, mince and grilling steaks.

However, sales of roasting joints fell by 2% as consumers opted for cheaper cuts or switched to lamb, as average beef retail prices rose by 4%, to £7.19p/kg, according to the latest data from analyst Kantar. Sales of chilled and frozen ready meals continued to decline, by 23% and 20%, respectively.

More recently, overall beef sales slowed compared to last year, with volumes dropping by 5% in the four weeks to 12 May, and roasting joint sales plummeting by 14.6%. “Beef accounted for 47.9% of red meat sales during this period, back slightly from 48.8% 2012,” said a report by the LMC in Northern Ireland. “Volume sales of pork and lamb have both increased.”

Over the 12-week period, sales of lamb increased by 21%, as retail prices fell by 8%, resulting in an 11% rise in overall expenditure. “Over 40% of consumers purchased lamb during that period, a 10% increase on the same period in 2012,” said the LMC report.
