‘Border Blacks’ attract top price for new herd

A new face on the Aberdeen Angus scene bought a wagonload of cattle including the day’s top priced cow at 6500gns, at the “Border Blacks” annual sale held in Berwickshire this week.

Establishing a new herd at Hexham, Northumbria, Stuart Mullen paid the top price for the four-year-old cow Wedderlie Evening Most A183.

She is by Cudlobe Fortune 32H and was suckling a bull calf by Tui Eriexis.

Adding further to his foundation stock, Mr Mullen gave 3500gns for the five-year-old cow Wedderlie Princessa Z033, a daughter of HF Dreamstreet 21F.

She had a heifer calf at foot by Wedderlie Blackadder Z093.

Major consignors Marion, John and Wanda Tilson, who hosted the event, sold every lot offered from their Wedderlie herd, with 36 head averaging 1901.

Strengthening their Aberdeen Angus interests, Norfolk-based breeders Tony and Philida Hurd gave the day’s second highest price, of 4200gns, for the young cow Wedderlie Princelle Z110 and her heifer calf by Wedderlie Blackbest A243.

And the Hurds were in again to give 4000gns for the two-year-old maiden heifer Wedderlie Ebblora C521 – a daughter of Wedderlie Blackadder Z093 with a heifer calf by Rawburn No Limits 5N at foot.

Breed society president John Elliott produced a guest consignment of three heifers which sold to 3500gns for Rawburn Erica C234, a daughter of Rawburn Transformer.

Averages: 54 lots 1809. (United Auctions)
