Breeder wins again at Red Rose Sale

Holstein breeder Carl Smith notched up his second consecutive championship at last week’s Red Rose Sale for the Lancashire Holstein Club with a Calbrett-I H H Champion daughter that sold for the top price of 1700gns.

Mr Smith, of Garstang, Lancs, took the championship ticket at this sale in October with another daughter of the Calbrett sire.

This time it was Inspired C C Hazel that caught judge Alan Goldie’s eye.

This freshly calved heifer is out of the good breeding cow Birchshade Prelude Harmony, which has given over 80t of milk from her first three lactations.

Hazel, whose sire stack includes Tradition and Valiant, was bought by telephone bidder Andrew Mackellar for his herd in Staffs.

Two entries from A R & J Witlow’s Arnot herd at Preesall, near Blackpool, accounted for the next two highest prices.

Arnot Freda 178th, a daughter of Regancrest Emory Derry, made 1500gns to Aubrey Greenhalgh, who was buying for Co Antrim farmer W R Graham.

Out of a Pont Koloriet dam, she was a month calved and giving 32kg.

Herdmate Arnot Lady 77th, a Comestar Stormatic calved heifer, goes back to Horwood Advance and Garsby Select breeding and made 1400gns to Robert Whiteford for his Holywood herd in Dumfries.

Last month’s fixture saw the Sanderson family from Cumbria secure several lots for their herd at Brampton.

And they were back again to give 1350gns for Whitecarr American Janina.

Averages: five cows 917, 63 calved and served heifers 953 (Norton & Brooksbank with North West Auctions).
