Longevity and a pedigree boasting plenty of milk helped the Ayrshire second calver Haresfoot Pamela 5th top last week’s sale of coloured dairy breeds at Beeston Castle, Cheshire, at 2200gns.

Consigned by Berks breeder Duncan Hunter, she is by Morwick Sand Ranger – a son of the part-Holstein sire Horizon Ranger Red – and out of the sixth calf cow Pamela 3rd, who is by Bonnie Brae Heligo.

Pamela 3rd produced three yields over 9500kg and was successful on the county show circuit.

The freshly-calved Pamela 5th goes to the herd of David Alderson at Northallerton, North Yorks.

Shropshire dairy farmers Jack and Barclay Taylor led the Jersey entry with a 1100gns call for their freshly calved heifer Burnbrae Blackhawk Margo (GP83).

By Wolf River Berretta Blackhawk and out of a Highland Duncan Lester dam, she had been calved a month and was giving 28kg on the day.

The buyers were W H Slater Farms, Sherrifhales, Shropshire.

One other Jersey broke the four-figure barrier when Saxown Cherubim Cash 32nd was claimed by Leyburn buyer D Harrison.

Consigned by local vendors Stuart Hassall and Jessica Miler from Tarporley, Cheshire, this February-calved heifer was giving 20kg.

An entry of maiden heifers from Guernsey breeder A J & M J Hall sold to 520gns for Thornton Romilla 13th – a daughter of Chiltern Vale Artic.

The buyers were R D & I E Kite of Stafford.

Averages: Ayrshires; nine cows and in-milk heifers £1020, three in-calf heifers £787. Jerseys; 27 cows and in-milk heifers £791, six in-calf heifers £645 and two maiden heifers £420.
