An apprenticeship grant, which helps employers with the cost of training an apprentice in England, has been extended to March 2014.
Initially only available in 2012 and 2013, the grant has been extended because of a positive response from employers. The scope has also been increased, meaning employers can now claim for up to 10 apprentices.
Small and medium-sized employers are eligible for the £1,500 grant, which goes towards training 16-24-year-old apprentices.
“I know it can be a big decision for busy, small companies to take on an apprentice,” said business secretary Vince Cable.
“Employers may be concerned about the time recruitment and training will take, and anxious about how it will work. So the £1,500 grant is a token to acknowledge this and thank employers. I hope many more people will take us up on our cash incentive to grow their business, and train up the workforce of the future.”
The National Apprenticeship Service has advisers on hand to guide new employers through the apprenticeship process, including:
• Defining an employer’s requirements with an apprenticeship adviser
• Discussing the right training provider, apprenticeship programme and confirming funding
• Determining the number of apprentices an employer requires
• Driving recruitment applications through the free apprenticeship vacancies service
• Deciding on the right person.
