Food group Cranswick is moving back into primary pig production after a gap of about 10 years, with the purchase of East Anglian Pigs.

The Norfolk-based pig breeder, rearer and finisher already supplies between 10 and 15% of Cranswick’s pig throughput and has extensive outdoor pig production facilities.

Securing supplies and shortening the supply chain were the motivation behind the purchase and Cranswick would be investing further in EAP, said Cranswick chief executive Adam Couch.

In addition to provenance and quality benefits, the primary production capacity would give Cranswick more flexibility in the breeds and types of pigs it processed, he said.

The EAP staff will transfer to Cranswick, which supplies fresh and processed food to UK food retailers, manufacturers and food service customers. Cranswick’s interests include fresh pork, gourmet sausages, premium cooked meats, traditional air-dried bacon, charcuterie, pastry products and sandwiches.
