There are tentative signs that the decline in UK milk production seen over the past five years may have bottomed out.

Provisional figures from the Rural Payments Agency show that UK wholesale milk deliveries last month were almost 4m litres above November 2008 at 986.4m litres.

It is the third consecutive month that milk production has exceeded the previous season and means that cumulative production for 2009/10 now stands at 8634.2m litres. That is fractionally below the same period last year, which saw the lowest total milk production since 1971/72.
