Ewes sell out at Hereford

The annual show and sale of breeding ewes comprised a larger entry of 3,649 head, which sold to total clearance on Tuesday (4 September). With a good selection of Suffolk and Texel crosses and more Welsh Mule yearlings, the sale averaged £132.53 a head – £7 lower than last year.


A pen of exceptional home-bred pure Charollais yearling ewes commanded the day’s top price of £253 a head, with crossbred ewes topping at £160 for Suffolk crosses, said auctioneer Michael Evans. Black-faced ewes sold for £138-154, with smaller sorts at £100-132. Texel crosses peaked at £152, with most from £110 to £150, while Welsh Mules sold to keenest interest throughout at £130-149 and topped at £154.
