AN AWARD-winning Welsh organic farm shop has obtained a £70,000 grant to develop adjacent meat storage, maturation and cutting facilities.

The House of Rhug enterprise was founded in 2002 to add value to organic beef cattle and sheep produced on Lord Newborough‘s estate at Corwen in Denbighshire.

It is a partnership between the estate‘s owner and Philip Hughes.

Already it sells meat and meat products from 1000 home produced lambs and 150 head of Aberdeen Angus cattle a year, plus 250 Norfolk Bronze turkeys.

Sales are over the counter of the shop, which is on the busy A5 tourist route to Snowdonia and near Chester and Liverpool, by mail order and over the internet.

Already the business offers a butchery and packaging service to other farmers who want to market to the public, and the new investment will make operation more streamlined.

“We will be developing sustainable, well paid skilled jobs supporting lamb and beef production in rural Wales,” said Mr Hughes.

The farm shop has won both gold and bronze True Taste of Wales Awards, an NFU Excellence Award, and the estate and retail outlet has been Aberdeen Angus Society organic unit of the year.

The Welsh Development Agency processing and marketing grant represents 40% of the total new development.
