FOOD SECURITY IS AIM OF NEW CAMPAIGN
A CAMPAIGN TO highlight the importance of food security is being mounted in the run-up to the next election by agricultural consortium, the Commercial Farmers Group (CFG)
.A spokesman for the organisation, which is made up of farmers, academics and agri-businesses, says a recent publication by the Office of National Statistics had prompted the move.
It showed that food imports rose by 24.6% to 19.1bn between 1992 and 2002. The annual balance of payments deficit for food during the same period went up from £4.7bn to £9.8bn. “We intend to make certain that all candidates in the forthcoming election are made aware of the case for national food security,” says CFG member and Yorks producer, Henry Fell.
