Former NFU Cymru president Hugh Richards has been ordered by Llanelli magistrates to pay a total of £920 after pleading guilty to 24 animal welfare charges.

Since leaving NFU Cymru Mr Richards has taken the post of chairman of Carmarthenshire County Council and in an ironic twist it was that council which brought the prosecution.

The prosecution and fine related to the transport of 12 lambs that foot rot had made unfit to travel. The total cost was made up of a £405 fine, costs of £500 plus a £15 surcharge.

Magistrates were told that Mr Richards, who farms at Felinfoel near Llanelli, had been devastated by the case.
