Hazlyn sale follows four-figure trend

More and more sales are returning four-figure averages and the dispersal of the Hazlyn Holstein herd in Devon was no exception, where 130 cows and calved heifers levelled at ÂŁ1220.

Vendors Colin and Christine Reed ended 40 years of dairying at Kentisbeare, near Cullompton, and their herd’s solid breeding and 8082kg average drew a big crowd and kept bids flowing.

There were 59 lots over 1000gns.

Top nod came for Hazlyn Princess 60th, a third calver sold fresh and giving 39kg.

By Crichel Benefit she realised 1800gns and shared the ride home with 12 other lots bound for the Cowling family’s herd in Cornwall.

Among them was a member of the herd’s Janet family due with her second in September.

By Riglio Juror Indro – a bull who had left some impressive daughters in the herd – she realised 1650gns.

Buyers clamoured for calved heifers and went to 1550gns for one from the herd’s most prolific Star family by Delka Juror Gordon. Buyers were Ludchurch Farms, Pembrokeshire.

The 10 freshly calved heifers averaged ÂŁ1286.

Close-at calving heifers by Convincer sold twice to 1020gns.

An April 2005-bred heifer by Shottle realised 840gns.

Averages: 130 milkers ÂŁ1220, 15 in-calf heifers ÂŁ854, five served heifers ÂŁ783, 17 bulling heifers ÂŁ698 and 11 yearlings ÂŁ700.
