Keen crowd takes Wellhead Jersey offering to 3000gns

Canadian Jersey breeding used successfully in Bucks breeder Ken Timbury’s Wellhead herd drew a big crowd of buyers to its dispersal this week, where bidding reached 3000gns for an in-milk heifer.

The herd was the highest yielding Jersey herd in 2003 and second highest in 2004.

Auctioneer Tom Brooksbank said:

“This sale gave breeders the chance to tap into the highest concentration of PI genetics to be found in any UK Jersey herd.”

Making the day’s highest bid was Robert Hunter, who runs the Clyde Valley Jersey herd and Letterkenny Holsteins in Midlothian.

His purchase, Wellhead Just Wait Marie (GP84), is by the Canadian sire Rapid Just Waite and out of the herd’s successful cow Strathallan Brook Sweet Marie.

She took first prize in the in-calf heifer class at last year’s Royal Show.

Cattle from the dispersal of Glos breeder Michael Potter’s Platinum herd were introduced into the Wellhead herd 10 years ago and Mr Potter was back this week to pay 2400gns for Wellhead Rocket Patsy.

This recently served heifer, a show winner in calf handling classes last season, is by Wellhead Remake Rocket and had been AI’d to Mordale Ren Raptor.

Averages: 83 cows and calved heifers 887, 18 served heifers 607 and 47 recently served and calved heifers 357.
