Lamb processors, wholesalers and retailers must be more transparent about their pricing if supply chain efficiency is to be improved, the National Sheep Association has urged.
It believes that sheep farmers would be keener to work with others in the supply chain if they better understood the cost structures involved. It proposed using a similar system to Eblex‘s Business Pointers producer costings.
The NFU said the Eblex figures reinforced the need for an increase in farmgate beef and sheep prices to enable producers to invest and ensure a sustainable future.
There were similar calls from Quality Meat Scotland, which said almost all Scottish livestock businesses lost money in 2007 without the single farm payment and predictions for 2008 were no better.
