Agriculture has been overtaken as the world’s main source of employment for the first time, according to a United Nation’s report.
About 40% of workers are now employed in services, compared with 38.7% in agriculture and 21.3% in industry.
In contrast, a decade ago 43.1% of employees worked in agriculture and 35.5% in services.
“We do expect the trend to continue,” said Dorothea Schmidt, the report’s author, adding that it was likely that the services sector would provide more than half of global employment opportunities in the future.
The shift from agriculture to services was particularly apparent in Asia, Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa, the report said.
