MPs are due to quiz senior DEFRA officials over the handling of the Single Payment Scheme.

The Public Administration Select Committee are holding a one-off evidence session to explore why the government has refused to pay compensation to farmers who have suffered losses because of mistakes in administering the scheme.

The session on Thursday morning (28 January) follows a Parliamentary Ombudsman report on the administration of the SPS by DEFRA and the Rural Payments Agency.

In an unusual move, the government decided not to accept the Ombudsman’s recommendations in full.

As a result the Ombudsman has made a special report to Parliament, claiming that injustice has been caused to these farmers which will not now be remedied.
