Arable farmers could benefit from premium contracts for new linseed variety Linoal, says Grainfarmers.

High yielding and early-maturing, Linoal is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, which are believed to reduce cholesterol and develop brain function, and is aimed at animal feed markets for meat and dairy products.

Contracts are available for harvest 2007 at £160/t, depending on quality and location, compared with spot prices of £130-£140/t.

Grainfarmers oilseeds director Andrew Barnard said Linoal could offer farmers an important added-value market when harvest prices for routine crushing would be about £20/t less.

As an industrial crop, linseed could also be grown on set-aside land, he said.
