A online calculator has been launched to help farmers and producers assess the carbon footprint of their produce and how much carbon is sequestered on the farm.
The Farm Carbon Calculator, which is available to use free online, was launched by Farm Carbon Cutting Toolkit (FCCT) at a special event at the Duchy Home Farm last week (1 February).
Together with the accompanying tool kit, which is also available online, it is hoped the calculator will show farmers how they can save energy and resources on their farms. The calculator links to the tool kit which when shows farmers how they can take action against carbon emissions.
FCCT director Jonathan Smith said: “Consumers, producers and retailers are increasingly demanding to know the carbon footprint of a product or food, putting pressure on farmers.”

Together with the tool kit, the calculator provides farmers with a means of measuring and then taking steps to reduce their emissions, he said.
Farmer Adam Twine, who is also a FCCT director, added: “As farmers, we all need to get more serious about the greenhouse gas emissions from our farms. This calculator and the accompanying tool kit has been developed by farmers for farmers to provide an efficient method of understanding which bit emits what and, most importantly, what we can then do about it.”
The calculator can be found at www.farmcarboncalculator.org.
