Ringside: Firm hogget trade at Cirencester

Cirencester livestock market Prime hogget trade at Thursday’s (17 February) sale was firmer than the previous week, despite a similar entry of 927 head.


Overall, hoggets averaged 178p/kg liveweight, with the best export types (38-42kg) trading between 185p and 194p/kg, and peaking at 198p/kg. Middle weights fetched 175-180p/kg, with heavy types (46kg+) between £85 and £93 a head.

Demand for the 197 cull ewes was very strong, with more entries needed, said auctioneer Chris Voyce of Voyce Pollin.

Trade peaked at £118 a head for Suffolk and Continental ewes, and averaged £64.46. Store sheep sold between £48 and £60 a head, with 226 going under the hammer.

In the cattle ring, prices were again ahead of deadweight values, with steers averaging 136p/kg and heifers settling at 154p/kg.
