Northallerton auction mart Increased sheep numbers met with strong demand at Tuesday’s (1 March) sale.

More than 1200 hoggets went under the hammer, breaking the £100 barrier and reaching £104.50 for a standard weight Texel. Lightweights averaged 191.74p/kg, with medium hoggs at 194.34p/kg, standard weights at 178.35p/kg and heavy types settling at 155.33p/kg. The 165 cast sheep averaged £77.42 a head and peaked at £127.

Prime cattle also sold well, with good-quality heifers breaching £2/kg and peaking at 205.5p/kg. Medium weight heifers averaged 164.17p/kg, up to 203.5p/kg, with heavyweights levelling at 153.04p/kg. Steers sold to 178.5p/kg and averaged 147.49p/kg. Medium weight bulls sold to 163.5p/kg, and averaged 139.38p/kg, with heavy types peaking at 166.5p/kg and averaging 138.47p/kg.
