Save Our Bacon: Public pledge support for fairer pig prices

More than 10,000 people have pledged their support for Britain’s pig farmers by signing an online petition calling for fairer prices.

The petition asks retailers to increase the price of British pork products after the British Pig Executive calculated pig farmers lost about £26 for every animal sold.

It will be handed to Downing Street next week (4 March) when pig producers from across the country will hold a rally in London to raise awareness of the crisis facing the industry.

Stewart Houston, BPEX chairman, said the number of people who had added their name to the petition was “excellent news”.

“It just goes to show that there is a whole lot of support out there from people who really do care about the plight of Britain’s pig farmers,” he added.

The petition coincided with the recording of Stand By Your Ham, a remake of the Tammy Wynette classic Stand By Your Man, by a group of 30 pig farmers.
