THE NUMBER of livestock entries for this year’s Smithfield Show is the highest for more than a decade.

Entries for the Dec 2-5 show total 542, says Geoffrey Burgess of The Royal Smithfield Club, organisers of the show’s livestock section. There are 342 cattle entries including 13 young farmers’ cattle and 40 in the suckled calves section.

Sheep entries total 200, with 126 in the pairs classes, six in the young farmers’ classes and 68 in the live/dead section. Judging takes place in the Main Ring and Sheep Ring on the Thursday and Friday, with the championships on Saturday. Auction sales are on Sunday.
