The Royal Bath and West of England Society is celebrating a major step towards the £120m-regeneration of its Somerset showground.

Mendip District Council last week approved the society’s masterplan, enabling individual planning issues to be dealt with by delegated powers.

The society will now submit its application for full planning permission, starting with a 35-acre solar photovoltaic park.

Plans to build hotels, a countryside shopping centre and an exhibition centre on the 240-acre site will follow.

“We are absolutely delighted,” said chief executive Jane Guise. “It is very exciting news and the beginning of a new era for the showground.

“In the next few months we will see the transition of what has been a relatively traditional showground into a 21st century venue, which is not only home to the Royal Bath and West Show, but also a modern and inviting centre for businesses to promote their wares in the heart of the rural community.”
