TOP TEXEL breeding pulled in the bids and took trading to 1280gns at a sale of in-lamb shearling ewes at Worcester, organised by the Gloucester and Border Counties breed club.

Devon breeder Bill Quick collected the day’s biggest cheque for a shearling from his Loosebeare flock. The ewe is by Loosebeare Idol, a son of Douganhill Ferrari, sire of the 32,000gns ram at the breed society”s 2003 national sale.

She is out of a Culter Allers Dram dam and is carrying twins to Loosebeare In Form. Buyers were J and C Mitchell of Tewkesbury.

Oxon breeder Charles Ponting earned 1020gns for a ewe from his Penstones flock. The ewe combines some hefty investments – she is by the 11,000gns Tophill Ice Prince and is carrying twins to the 14,000gns Claybury Jaguar, a son of Haddo Ignitor. The ewe heads for Gwent with J N Lewis, Ebbw Vale.

The Lyonshall flock of Hereford-based N Layton produced the most expensive sheep snapped up by volume buyer S Clarke from Burton-on-Trent.

He accounted for several of the best ewes on offer and gave 810gns for one by Muiresk Imperial Quality. She was scanned for twins by Milnbank Kingpin, an 8500gns lamb bought at Lanark last year. The 55 ewes averaged £392.
