Sympa, the bull that is proving such a hit in the Haltcliffe Limousin herd in Cumbria, undoubtedly brought his influence to bear in the top call of 4000gns at last week’s sale of unhaltered females at Carlisle where a young cow suckling a Sympa heifer and in-calf to him again stirred the bidders.
Silk Selena, consigned from Matt and Craig Ridley’s Haltcliffe herd but bred by G Sharpin, Norfolk, looked a good price for three lives.
By the Greensons Gigolo son Cockleshell Olympus and out of a Brookside Viking dam, she was claimed by Andrew Ewing for his herd at Annan, Dumfriesshire.
He also gave 1600gns for Rika, an imported French-bred cow consigned by the Ridleys.
By Mars, she too was suckling a heifer calf by Sympa and in-calf to him again.
An undisclosed buyer paid 2850gns for Geufron Vogue from B and J Evans’ Penrhos herd, Caersws, Powys.
This maiden heifer is by Garryvaughan Simon – a son of Staveley Hurricane – and out of a Ronick Hawk dam.
The first lot in the ring made 2000gns for Berwickshire breeder Dermot Small who offered Redpaths Nestle.
Bred by Keith Redpath at Kelso, this 1997 daughter of Ronick Gains is out of a French dam by Labeur and had an impressive beef value of 35.
She was sold with a new-born calf at foot by Gammin and joins the Cardiff-based herd of Andrew Prichard.
Also heading south with Cardiff-based buyer W Jenkins was Redstone Ursula, a 2003-bred cow from Mrs Beryl Haslam’s herd at Lockerbie.
This daughter of Junior is out of a dam by Gaulois and from a Peasley cow that has been one of the most successful in the herd having bred an 8000gns daughter.
The six-year-old cow Rundales Pam from David Howe, Appleby, Cumbria, made 1600gns to D and M Scott, Bellingham, Northumberland, while Mr Ewing was in again at 1550gns to take Millstone Oenette – a 1998-bred cow by Lestgo with a bull calf at foot by Raysonhall Penyghent.
She was consigned by D Walker, Egremont, Cumbria.
