MPs were last night shown footage which questions the systems used to produce cheap pork imports.
In a eye-opening video constructed by animal welfare campaigner Tracy Worcester, MPs, farm leaders and NGOs viewed “disturbing” footage of pig farming methods used across Europe and parts of America.
Following airing of the footage at the Houses of Parliament, Ms Worcester explained how EU laws to maintain pig comfort and prohibit tail docking were being broken every day in factory farms that supplied the UK market.
Ms Worcester also raised concern that many UK citizens were unknowingly eating cheaply produced pork, with schools, prisons and hospitals the main culprits serving imported pork instead of sourcing from the UK where animal standards are one of the highest in the EU. She urged every one to use their consumer power to buy British.
