Waitrose recalls organic eggs over lead fears

Waitrose has recalled some organic eggs over fears that they are contaminated with lead.

Reports in the media at the weekend highlighted that the Colombian blacktail hen eggs were all from one farm which supplies the retailer. Free-range birds from one flock wandered on to a field being used for clay-pigeon shooting and ate lead shot.

A vet was called after some of the birds became ill and it was discovered they had higher than normal levels of lead.

A spokesman for Waitrose said: “As a precaution we are recalling extra large, large and medium organic blacktail Colombian organic eggs with the code of OUK 20137 stamped on each individual egg. This recall applies to all date codes up to and including 21 May.”
