A glittering selection of Holstein and Jersey genetics lifted ringsiders’ spirits at Carlisle last weekend, with trade reaching 32,000gns for a 14-month-old Holstein heifer and 4600gns for a nine-month-old Jersey.
The Borderway Black and White sale saw 58 Holstein maiden heifers average 3630 and seven Jersey maidens level at 2130.
And Cheshire breeder Mark Nutsford’s Riverdane Holsteins took a big slice of the action with Riverdane Silky Elegance, co-owned with Adrian & Ben Nottage.
Imported as an embryo, this Silky Cousteau daughter is out of Budjon-JK Linjet Eileen who gave 15,880 litres with her second to back up an illustrious show career.
Among a long list of major show successes, she won an Honourable Mention title at the World Dairy Expo 2004 and at the All-American 2004 event.
Bred from a high production and top-winning family with a sire stack to die for, she made 32,000gns to Bucks-based Honeypot Holsteins after a bidding battle with an un-named telephone challenger.
This year’s high-profile black and white investor, Bremridge Farms, was among the sale’s main contenders and paid 11,200gns for the January 2005-bred Overside Ladino Delight from The Firm of W W Neilson, Lanarks.
Offered with contract interest from Genus, this heifer is out of Overside Convincer Delight whose genetics are in worldwide demand.
Cumbria buyer Peter Sherwin gave 11,000gns for the first choice on a female calf from a pregnancy due in early January and offered by fellow Cumbrians D Robinson and D Reynolds.
The pregnancy is by Regancrest Dundee and carried by Budjon-JK Linjet Epic.
Jersey leader at 4600gns was the top-winning heifer calf Rapid Bay-UK JJ Let’s Dance from Suffolk breeders James Strachan and Candace Borland.
This nine-month-old calf was first All-Breeds All-Britain 2005 and joins Designer Holsteins, Essex.
Carlisle-based J Hodgson sold his 11-month-old Jersey heifer Holmeden Montana J Silva at 2500gns to S and S Murray, Wolverhampton, while a 2350gns call from Lancs buyers G and D Pye secured them the third-calf Jersey cow Millcoat Twinkle from Carol Wood’s herd at Carnforth.
