I'm aware of the issues of quick chilling and testing etc. and I do trust they know what they're doing.

I have to say I'm wondering if it is any use or just a "lottery" as you say. Is it really only an exercise for justifying inputs on paper or can it be of real agronomic use if done properly? What do you think?

Also can you explain more to me about how the tissue analysis would compliment the results and which method you favour to calculate soil N?

Our smn's were average (i.e. 40 kg/ha N) and gai's were (in early March) more like the typical 2's one would hope for at that time of year. No sewage sludge, compost or fym was applied prior to sowing (so as not to delay drilling). The total applied figure of 220 kg of N per ha (in two main splits) were taken from the TAG recommendations and with this advice and also being FACTS qualified I was happy with this figure. Hope this explains, regards Peter

220kg of N seems a bit much - I dont know your SMN or what GAI you had after winter, but knowing that "Large amounts of sewage sludge, green waste compost and farmyard manure are applied to help maintain soil organic matter levels and the fertility left by the cows", I put some figures into the Kemira calculator, and a GAI tool that my agronomist provided and that does look like a hell of a chunk of N if you have only historically had 4.4t/ha of seed offtake.

I dont want to be rude, but could you tell me how you got to 220kg/ha N?

The soil is not heavy, more medium - chalky clay loam changing to silty clay loam. Its hard to understand why your situation should give under 20kg and mine over 130 - you 've probably got heavier land and after beans as well and similar cultivations. I have heard that the same sample sent to different labs have come back with different results, which is obviously not very helpful! Unless there are any other factors - rainfall some effect but as mentioned above its pretty wet here( usually we average about 710 mm / year).

Apparently it is hard to get it much drier than that where he is, although occasionally it has been down to 28-29%.

I'll see if I can get Troy to answer your other questions directly.

Driving around in East Anglia today there was a lot of drilling going on. Conditions as Troy says above are just about perfect at the moment, so I suspect some of the crops going in now, could match, or even better earlier drilled crops that went into pretty dry seed-beds.

So I think it is possible for later drilled crops to yield higher than earlier drilled ones.

Having said that on the whole over here yields drop off the later you drill, but it is still pretty safe to plant winter wheat until end of Jan, depending on variety. Some good late drillers, such as Xi19, do tend to have some spring parentage though.

What about the population, row width and fertilizer applied?

There is still quite a bit of wheat left to be drilled here if the pile of seed wheat in our local elevator is any indication. Ideally I would like to have all mine in by November 1, but it seems that will not be possible this year. I have heard stories from year to year about people having the best wheat crop ever that was planted around Christmas, but I think that is the exception rather than the rule. With our late freeze ruining much of our wheat last year, many of us now are just as wary of planting too early as too late.
