Organic Debate – what’s the issue?

This December Hadlow College will be hosting the first Fresh Start Christmas debate.  The title is Organic Farming Myth or Legend.  So what are the main issues we need to discuss?

Food security, environment, disease management, conservation, fuel use, animal welfare....?

The issue is how do we continue farming as oil becomes scarce and expensive: fertilisers, fuel, transport, energy for heating/ drying/ etc.

World production of oil appears to have peaked in 2005. That's why we had an energy crisis in 2007/8, which caused a recession and contributed to the financial crisis. From now on we must assume that oil will, with some ups and downs, be overall scarcer and dearer, causing all forms of energy to go up in price and thus ensuring that economic growth is no longer possible.

At Cottage Farm we have demonstrated that it is perfectly possible to farm without fossil fuels and still using machinery and energy. I have given a presentation about that at The Royal Agriculture College, The Transition Network conference and various other meetings. Next month I am speaking at the Eco-Innovations conference held at Westminster Hall. I would be very happy to share our experience with others at this or other meetings and conferences.
