Roller coaster temps

80F Monday and Tuesday, 13F this morning.  I was surprised while in the UK to learn it rarely gets this cold there??  Just how cold does it get in the UK this time of year?  This is actually a little colder than normal, while the 80F was much warmer than normal.  Brings to mind a quote from one of my distant relatives in Yorkshire while we sat in their garden visiting one chilly July day this summer, "Global warming is a bloody disappointment as far as I am concerned".  I agree.

Hi, KF.

The UK has a maritime climate, unlike the continental climate you get in the Midwest, so it shouldn't be as extreme. Europe gets your sort of weather in places like Hungary, Russia and Ukraine.

UK temperatures have usually been about 20F min and 70F max in the north,30F min and 75F max in the south in the last century or so, but we've always had odd years of higher or lower temperatures, with last summer  approaching 100F max on a couple of days.

In recent years, we've had more extreme weather - hotter, colder, drier, wetter at different times, which is precisely what the global "warming" theory predicts. Not warmer weather, just weirder.

Still on our roller coaster weather pattern, which tends to be our norm.  Monday and Tuesday were nice days, 50s Monday, nearly a perfect day Tuesday with sun, light wind, and 60 or so.  Wednesday in the 40s with a wind of about 25mph from the north, now this morning 27 and freezing rain.

It is drizzly in London today but pretty mild. I guess we're around the 50-60F mark today, although looking at the forecast it is going to be a bit cooler over the weekend. Going back to you original question - I've just looked at some Met Office stats and the lowest evert temp recorded was -27.2 °C (-16F) in Scotland. But in general at this time of year, while it does go below freezing it doesn't go that far (-2 or -3C).
