Considering things like future fert availability, mixed farming could be the way forward.

I used to consider that the long term was just a load of short terms all stuck together, but now I think that a degree of long term planning is needed when doing things in farming. You build a dutch barn but decide not to put a concrete base in it - thats what I would have done on grounds of short term cost, but now I think it should be done. Concrete only going to get more expensive and you may as well do it and get the use from it.

Low density, low stress rare breed suckler cattle? All I need is another 300ac to get bought. Still looking to expand the arable, but will be either contract farmed on nasty rotations, or owned ourselves and growing high value stuff.

Continuous wheat would suit me well. Simple, easy, less kit. Good weed control and no manic rush for drilling like with rape. Goodbye slug problem. Have done both ploughbased on lighter land and non-plough on the gristle to variable effect.

I never get sick of saying that wheat for next years harvest is not at £80 a ton. Sorry for those who have to sell this year for £80 but plenty of chances to sell for better. I think early next season will be knackered too but looking at wet fields of poor looking late wheats, there will not be the tonnage in the UK that there is now.

Grass or continuous wheat - at least there are no ploughs involved!

Every time I speak to you you change ur mind in which direction to head - ud never hang urself! I do have to agree with ur father about the continuous wheats as weve never had any major success doing so. Mind you, at £80/tonne its not worthwhile anyway.

This year the non-ploughed beans did 2t/ac, whilst the ploughed beans did closer to 3t/ac.

However, it has shown how good the non-ploughing system is - lighter land that was ploughed 4 years ago was bloody awful, whereas what we considered heavy land that has not been ploughed for years came up wonderful.

Just.....so......painfully......slow. When you are used to boshing well over 100ac with the solo a day, getting 25 done with the plough is painful. Still, only another week or so to go.

NH machine was the best one, and to be fair I think we are the first people to break the bit we did. Thye had their demonstrator on farm the next day - just a shame that it poured down inbetween.

Still, with the dealer loosing a really good mechanic and the parts fun it is perhaps time we looked further for the next one. Case rotary with quad tracks perhaps?
