It has been pretty quiet in The Ding (Reading) the terrible weather has forced everyone indoors into the library or back under the duvet . unfortunately with the deadlines looming i have been driven to the strip lighting and uncomfortable chairs of the library.

at least when the weather is this bad you dont feel like you are missing out on anything.

Does anyone know of any good summer internships (preferably in the retail industry) for a keen hard working student?

(123 of 1500 words, better crack on)

Actually quite interesting.

Student accomodation isn't renouned for its comfort, but this year i thought i was onto a winner nice house nice location and crawling distance from the pub.

But as i shook the ice out of my hair this morning I realised I may have made a minor oversite, that's right- crawling back from the pub on your knees does nothing for the longevity of your trousers- oh and we havent got any heating.

Heating was not big on the list of priorities when on a scorching hot day last summer we realised we hadn't got anywhere to live and everybody else had. In a typical last minute reluctance we trooped to the nearest House up for grabs. We may have made several minor yet basic errors.

The houses previous occupants- all girls- were 'pretty hot', this focussed our attentions (not on the house). So having considerably outstayed our welcome we decided the house was fine; it didnt seem to dawn on us the girls were intending to move out.

The facts the house had no central heating, dodgy plumbing and a washing machine capable of shredding a suit of armour were over looked.

At least we are doing our bit for the enviroment.

the BEAST (cold)

(Quick fact; we would need 610% of the uk's cropped and set-aside land to provide fuel for the uk's transport needs)

It has been a fairly brisk harvest with few upsets- bar a brief wet period- and a great experience.

I am now fluent in the zimbabwaen lingo having lived with three lads who made the journey over for harvest. So while we had a Bri (BBQ) we would suck on dob(beer) and if it got cold put on our longs (trousers) every morning there would be the chorus of "howzits" and the constant use of "is it?" as a response to any question remains baffling.

Living with guys from a Zim has been an intersting experience all of them had lost farms at the hands of "Bob" Mugabe and we followed the news closely, the situation sadly appears to be deteriating when one lad went back to Zim for a funeral he packed rice and sugar for his folks, terrible for a fmily who once employed hundreds on their farms. Thnkfully the dont seem bitter by the experience and all look forward to returning when the country stabillizes.

Having sepnt hours sat in a tractor with only the radio for company it became the number one topic for conversation, my personal prefference being radio 1 with Chris Moyles (love him or hate him) and a bit of surfing in between. I have also developed a complex relationship with Sarah Cox- of course she doesnt know this yet, i am sure there are many farmers out their with a soft spot!

I look forward to getting back to uni and more importantly the girls (its been a long harvest), eating something that isn't from a tin in a house that you dont need protective clothing to enter and having a dob or three.

A quick joke from one of the zim lads (sorry for the lack of taste) - there is a new barbie out, shes got no food no clothes and no shoes- whats she called?

Zim-Barbie ( they thought it was funny)
