Valentine’s Day – say it with spuds

By FWi staff

A WESTCOUNTRY farming couple are making the most of Valentines Day – by selling heart-shaped potatoes from their farm shop near Bristol.

Andrew and Trish Jeffery are selling 40 of the potatoes for 1 each to eager customers at their shop at Home Farm, in the village of Farrington Gurney.

“A lot of people might think their wife would go berserk if they bought her a potato for Valentines Day,” Mr Jeffery told FARMERS WEEKLY.

“But these potatoes are extremely rare and I think they are very romantic.”

The potatoes are of the Wilja variety and were picked out of a regular crop as they were sorted on a conveyor belt after harvest.

While encouraging a spirit of romance among his customers, however, Mr Jeffery has less than romantic plans for Valentines Day himself.

“I am trying to build a new farm shop and will be taking delivery of three loads of concrete, so my nose will be to the grindstone,” he said.
